Farming in the Mill River Watershed

Farming continues to be a vibrant component of the Mill River watershed. Row crops are especially important in the fertile lowlands near the confluence of the Mill River and the Connecticut River, while the rugged upland areas on the western side of the watershed support many small dairy and livestock operations.

Farming contributes to the region in many ways. In addition to directly adding to the economy (produce & employment), the beauty of farms directly benefits the region's tourism.

At present, UMass Extension is working with farmers in the watershed to enhance their viability and maintain/improve the watershed's water quality.
