Floodplain Forest

The Mill River watershed supports over a dozen of the state's rarest plants and animals, as well as several rare habitat types, including vernal pools, bogs, rich, mesic woods and one of the state's best examples of floodplain forest. The watershed also contains the largest unfragmented swamp forest in the Connecticut River Valley, known as the Great Swamp, and its western portion is one of the largest blocks of unfragmented forest in Massachusetts. Both areas are priorities for protection for the MA Division of Fisheries and Wildlife and The Nature Conservancy-MA Chapter.
