common component of the mixed forest in the fertile soils in the
western watershed (left). Mountain maple (right) is a small tree
in the understory. It is more typical of northern forests and is
found in cool dark ravines within the watershed. |

| A borrow pit along
Route 91 and within the area known as the Great Swamp. The area
provides habitat for waterfowl, fish and lots of species of dragonflies.
Two of the unusual plants found here are shown below: cranberry
and the rose pogonia orchid. |
