Vegetation in the Mill River Watershed

Mixed Forests in Western Watershed Hemlock Woods

Sugar Maple is a common component of the mixed forest in the fertile soils in the western watershed (left). Mountain maple (right) is a small tree in the understory. It is more typical of northern forests and is found in cool dark ravines within the watershed.

Pin Oak are common along the Mill River above the Hatfield Dam Sensitive Fern

A borrow pit along Route 91 and within the area known as the Great Swamp. The area provides habitat for waterfowl, fish and lots of species of dragonflies. Two of the unusual plants found here are shown below: cranberry and the rose pogonia orchid.


Blue Flag Iris grow in marshes and wet meadows Red maple is the dominant canopy tree in the swamp forests in the Mill River Watershed

Silver Maple is the dominant canopy tree in the floodplain forest near the confluence of the Mill River and Connecticut River
