Rare Plant Species:

Seven state-listed plant species are presently known from the watershed:

Winged Monkey Flower (Mimulus alatus) (MA Endangered) grows along the muddy shores of the Mill River and its flood channels

Deergrass (Deschampsia cespitosa) (MA Endangered) occurred in one small floodplain area between Chestnut Street and the railroad tracks near C & S Wholesalers

Bush's Sedge

Bush's Sedge (Carex bushii) (MA Endangered) occurs in the Broad Brook drainage in Northampton (see image)

Green Dragon (Arisaema dracontium) ( MA Threatened) grows in the silver maple floodplain forest in Hatfield

Variegated Horsetail (Equisetum variegatum) (MA Special Concern) occurs in the Roaring Brook drainage

Fringed Gentian (Gentiana crinita) (MA Special Concern) occurs in the Roaring Brook drainage

American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolia) is known from a few localities in Whately and Hatfield

In addition, a small population of Floating Burreed (Sparganium fluctuans-Watch-Listed) was also observed in a wetland within The Rocks section of Hatfield.
